　　斷句是同聲傳譯技巧中最基本的技巧，是所有技巧的基礎。一段話應該斷在何處、斷句之后又如何把句子的各個部分有機地連接起來，是斷句技巧的關鍵所在。那么如何斷句呢，這就需要譯員經過大量練習，熟悉兩種語言的異同之處，并逐漸擺脫原句結構和表達方式的影響，然后譯員才能靈活地調動如語氣、手勢、語調、如語氣等諸多技巧以求達意。

　　“適時等待”就是指在不適合斷句的時候，譯員為了使譯出的句子準確連貫，適時放慢速度，等發言人講出較為完整的意思后接著翻譯。這種“等待”就需要譯員具有工作記憶力，一般工作記憶力的時效非常有限，因此譯員等待的時間不宜過久，所以在該斷時就要“當機立斷”。不做出準確地判斷而等待過久常常會使記憶負擔過重，最后導致漏譯等問題的出現。
